Middle School Math

Pre-Algebra, Finally Clear.

Ratios, negative numbers, equations and the first real abstraction. This is where many students decide they are "not a math person." They are wrong, and this is where we prove it.

In short

Middle school math tutoring covers grades 6 to 8: integers, ratios and percents, expressions and equations, early geometry and statistics, plus the advanced tracks that put Algebra 1 in 7th or 8th grade. Sessions are one on one with a certified 6 to 12 math teacher who teaches high school Algebra, so the habits we build are exactly the ones Algebra 1 and the Florida EOC will test.

What we cover

What Sessions Cover

Taught from your child's actual class, in the order the class moves.

  • Integers, order of operations and negative numbers
  • Ratios, rates, percents and proportional reasoning
  • Expressions, one- and two-step equations and inequalities
  • Introductory geometry: area, volume, angles
  • Statistics and probability basics
  • Advanced and accelerated middle school math (Algebra 1 in 8th grade)
How we work

How We Work

  1. Match the class

I teach high school Algebra now, so I know exactly what middle school needs to set up. We work from your child's actual assignments.

  2. Steps, written out, every time

Pre-algebra is a set of habits. We build the habit of showing the step, checking the sign and reading the question twice.

  3. Advanced math welcome

Both of the parents whose reviews are on this site came for advanced middle school math. It is my favorite work.

Questions

Questions About Middle School Math

My child is in advanced math and taking Algebra 1 in 8th grade. Can you help?

Yes, and it is my favorite work. Both of the parent reviews on this site came from advanced middle school math. Algebra 1 in middle school is a high school credit with the same state EOC exam, so we prepare for it the same way.

What is pre-algebra, exactly?

Pre-algebra is the bridge from arithmetic to algebra: working with negative numbers, ratios and proportions, writing expressions with variables and solving one- and two-step equations. Gaps here are the most common reason Algebra 1 feels impossible later.

How do you handle the FAST test for grades 6 to 8?

Florida's FAST math test is given three times a year, with the spring round as the one that counts. We fold its question types into regular sessions rather than cramming, so the test is a checkpoint, not an event.

How long before grades improve?

Most families see homework get calmer within a few sessions and test grades follow once we have closed the specific gap. I tell you what the gap is after the first session so you know what we are working toward.
