In short

Algebra tutoring at Yani's Tutoring is one-on-one help with Algebra 1, Algebra 1 Honors, Algebra 2 and Algebra 2 Honors from a certified teacher who teaches high school Algebra every weekday. Sessions follow the pacing, vocabulary and test formats your child sees at school, including the Florida Algebra 1 EOC, which counts as 30 percent of the course grade and is required for a standard diploma.

What we cover

What Sessions Cover

Taught from your child's actual class, in the order the class moves.

  • Solving and graphing linear equations and inequalities
  • Systems of equations, three ways
  • Functions, domain and range, transformations
  • Exponents, radicals and polynomials
  • Factoring and quadratics: by hand, by formula, by graph
  • Algebra 2: rational, exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences and series
  • Florida Algebra 1 EOC preparation
Worked examples

Two Problems, Worked The Way We Work Them

Every step written, every why in the margin. This is what a session looks like on paper.

Algebra 1 · worked exampleSolve for x

3(x − 4) = 2x + 1

  1. 3x − 12 = 2x + 1Distribute first. This is where most mistakes happen: the 3 multiplies both terms, including the −4.
  2. 3x − 2x − 12 = 1Collect the x terms on one side. Subtract 2x from both sides.
  3. x − 12 = 1Combine like terms. 3x minus 2x is just x. Nothing fancy.
  4. x = 13Add 12 to both sides. Whatever you do to one side, you do to the other.
Check3(13 − 4) = 27 and 2(13) + 1 = 27 ✓Both sides match. Always check: it turns a guess into a known.
Algebra 1 and 2 · worked exampleSolve by factoring

x² − 5x + 6 = 0

  1. (x − 2)(x − 3) = 0Find two numbers that multiply to 6 and add to −5. That is −2 and −3.
  2. x − 2 = 0 or x − 3 = 0Zero product rule. If two things multiply to zero, one of them is zero.
  3. x = 2 or x = 3Two answers, because a quadratic can cross the x-axis twice.
Check4 − 10 + 6 = 0 and 9 − 15 + 6 = 0 ✓Both solutions work. Check each one on its own.
How we work

How We Work

  1. I teach this course

Algebra is my classroom subject. Sessions line up with the pacing, the vocabulary and the test formats your child sees at school.

  2. Worked problems, out loud

Every new skill is modeled fully, then your child drives while I ask the questions a test would ask.

  3. Mistake patterns, named

Most students repeat the same three errors. We find theirs, name them and build the check that catches them.

Questions

Questions About Algebra 1 and 2

How important is the Florida Algebra 1 EOC?

Very. Under Florida law the Algebra 1 EOC counts as 30 percent of the final course grade, and students need a passing score, or an approved comparative score, to earn a standard high school diploma. We start EOC-style practice well before the spring testing window.

What is the difference between Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 tutoring?

Algebra 1 is linear equations, systems, functions, exponents and quadratics. Algebra 2 goes deeper into polynomial, rational, exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences and series. Many Algebra 2 struggles are really Algebra 1 gaps, so we check the foundation first.

Can you work from my child's actual homework and tests?

That is the plan every session. Bring the current assignment, the study guide and the last graded test, and we build from there instead of from a generic workbook.

Do you tutor Algebra online?

Yes. Algebra works very well on a shared digital whiteboard, and everything we write is saved and sent after the session.
